I have always wanted to get out on the St John's River with my kayak, so this morning I went to Hatbill Park, in Mims. With all of the rain last night, it probably wasn't the best time to do this. The paddle down river was easy, but the paddle back up river was HARD! I have been spoiled by all of my usual paddling spots, where the water doesn't flow.
There wasn't much bird activity, but as usual I found a few things to shoot. Overall it was a nice trip and a good new experience. On the road into Hatbill, I turned a corner and had 12 Wild Turkey in the middle of the road (no pictures). The highlight was back near the launch, finding a Red-shouldered hawk hunting the grassy area for bugs. I was able to drift down near him and get some shots of him going from his perch on a palm tree, down to catch a bug and return to the tree. After the long hard upriver paddle I stopped at Loughman Lake Lodge for a relaxing beer in an Adirondack chair before heading home.
